This mini-interview with artist Anthony Zinonos is from our awesome friend Jacqueline Bos from Portland!  Thanks to both of you for such a great interview and amazing work!

Anthony is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work encompasses collage, printmaking and poignant narrative. The dynamics he creates using found images is truly unique, possessing a tactile, narrative quality that is simple yet complex. Each image he uses seems to be chosen with the utmost care and consideration for it’s future context, and his work reflects that deliberate care. Anthony currently lives in the UK and one day hopes to live somewhere nice and warm!  He was nice enough to answer a few questions about his work and life, here they are:

Jacqueline: Hi Anthony! What sorts of things have you been working on this week?

Anthony: Had a couple of commissions to finish off, some DIY collage kits to make for stockists then just general sorting out and getting rid of stuff because Gemma, Mr P and I are moving to Berlin next month which is all very exciting but like wise stressful!!

Jacqueline: I’m curious about other collage artist’s gathered materials, how do you find yours? Do you stock pile tons of clipping for later or are you super organized about it?

Anthony: I find most of my materials from carboot sales and second hand (thrift) stores, mainly I collect old books and magazines so they go straight on my over loaded bookshelf and patiently wait there till I chop them up to use. Right now though because of the move I’m trying to be a bit more organized and shortlist stuff and even scan loads of images I might need for commissioned work, a new process for me so we’ll have to see how it works out. I’m a collector though there is no denying it so no matter how much paper bits I get rid of I’ll always some how accumulate more.

Jacqueline: What was your favorite “art” (or fort) project as a kid?

Anthony: There was this crazy tree near the side of our house which I used to ride like a windsurfer. There was a branch to stand on and another to hold onto which also had a belt attached to a shoelace which went around your waist so you could really lean back on the branches. I used to spent hours on that thing bouncing around making ocean noises hahaha…

Jacqueline:  Favorite place in the world?

Anthony: That’s a tough one I guess it’s a tie between a greek island like Paros and Southern California both places make me think of great food, good weather and going on little adventures discovering things.

Jacqueline: Are there any new media you’re dying to experiment with?

Anthony:  I’ve been thinking a lot about film again recently so definitely want to have a little play around with making some video pieces. I’ve been capturing my super 8 collection too getting them all digitized so will probably start with that found footage of random peoples amateur films.

Jacqueline: I bet you have a pretty awesome current playlist, what’s on it?

Anthony:  Nothing too exciting there is a bit of: Velvet Underground, No Age, New order, Rolling stones, Deerhunter, Black keys, T-Rex, Kills and recently some Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.

Jacqueline: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would you like to work with?

Anthony: I’d have to say John Copeland I really like what he is doing so would be a good excuse to have a little chat and see his work in person.

Jacqueline:  Have you taught Mr. Norman Pickles any cool tricks lately?

Anthony:  Yep he can now do high fives and spin around, but he can only spin anti- clockwise for some reason getting him to spin the other way just doesn’t work :D
